Tokyo Rock City

Rock-related stuff from Tokyo!

  1. “Rose” – Anna Tsuchiya

This Japanese/Russian-American actor/musician sings the opening theme song for the anime version of Nana, based on Ai Yazawa’s hugely popular manga.

  2. Mari’s Rock

Great spooky store on Takeshita Dori in Harajuku – thanks Steve! Where else can you buy a studded Hannibal Lecter face mask?

  3. Marui Young

Four floors of gothic lolita shopping in a East Shinjuku mall. Wayyyyy better than Hot Topic.

  4. Pink Dragon

A small, 3 floor rockabilly mall b/w Shibuya and Harajuku on Meiji Dori with a museum housing the skeletons of ‘real’ dragons.

  5. Tower Records Shibuya

    7 floors tall!

  6. TBD

  7. Hello Kitty RnR

In Japan, Hello Kitty also comes dressed as a punk rocker, a gothic lolita, and a sweet lolita. The different outfits suit her mouth-less magesty quite well.

  8. TBD

  9. Restaurant Music

A few restaurants I’ve been in have played music that morphs from traditional Japanese stuff with shakahuchi into OTT hard rock. More please!

  10. Kiss Camera

I haven’t quite figured it out yet, but it seems to be a high end camera endorsed by Kiss. Seriously, the commercials show kids in kiss-face, singing “I Was Made For Loving You.”
