Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey (R)
The best documentary I HAVE EVER SEEN on any musical genre. Every kind of metal is discussed, every type of person is interviewed – from rockstars to sociologists to industry people to fans. It is a serious yet entertaining look at an undeniably important phenomenon in rock ‘n’ roll.
The lead singer of Bell Hollow has an entrancing solo project – a sort of Neil Halstead to Bell Hollow’s Slowdive, as he described it. The one-room cafe was brimming with Niles’ ominous, agile vocals, perspicacious lyrics and propulsive melodies, making it one of the best small shows I’ve seen in a while. Check out more here.
Go Go Dancing to the Wipers’s “Let’s Go Away”
I’ve seen bikini clad go go girls grind to a lot of songs, but this one really cracked me up last night at the Motor City Bar in the LES.
“Day Dream” – D
“Ah Ah” – Anna Tsuchiya
Deliciously dark electro re-workings of sleaze metal classics by FP. Basically a Newlydeads spin on everything.
Norwegian Black Metal
I’ve decided to rethink my uninformed opinion of this genre as a whole. Emperor intrigues me…
They played a new song, “Dance Like A Monkey,” that knocked me out! Not only are they still amazing live (check my show review out here), but they still got it when writing new material!
Rape at Ozzfest
Ugh. I’d put this on negative ten if I could. Just what metal needs – more bad press!
