Songs for the Season

1. IAMX – “President”

   Hard not to think about the presidency during these auspicious times. See the moody melancholy of Chris Corner in the flesh here. The “lonely boys” he croons to may now very well have someone who speaks for them…

2. Mazzy Star – “Still Cold”

3. The Sisters of Mercy – “Driven Like the Snow”

4. Mirror – “Nostalgia” (featuring Dave Gahan)

   A song from the cinematic pop project put out by Thomas Anselmi. It’s dark and reflective, if not a tad maudlin – just like the post-holiday season, right? See Mr. Gahan sing vocals for this one in the video here.

5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – “Cold Light”

6. Kronos Quartet – “Black Angels I. Departure”

   Classical for the creeping things. A three-movement piece by George Crumb from 1971 that was just brought to my attention. Cacophonic insectavoria.

7. Kronos Quartet – “Black Angels II. Absence”

8. Kronos Quartet – “Black Angels III. Return”

9. Lady GaGa – “Poker Face”

   Sure she’s another version of Madonna or Gwen with some updated synths and attitude – but this song sticks out because she actually seems to be simultaneously bad ass and vulnerable. Love the Aladdin-Sane-like lightning bolt, too. Watch her here.
