Best of Summer

The Village Voice gets something right
First lauding Wierd Records and Blacklist, then Sacred Bones Records with a shout out to The Hunt – is dark post-punk and coldwave truly in vogue now?
NY Eye and Ear Fest II (July 9-12)

Blacklist – Midnight of the Century (Wierd)
Religious to Damn – Falls Down Again 7” (M’Lady’s)
Japan Cuts @ Japan Society.

Kas Product – “Never Come Back”
One of my favorites played Wierd Wednesday's
Home Sweet Home. DJ Frankie Teardrop finally set me straight as to which coldwave group created it.
Otakon 2009 (July 1-19) Baltimore, MD
Yearly gathering of Japanime freaks + geeks. Cosplay is at its finest, and the nerdery is high. Great section of Japanese and Japanese-inspired wares in the basement, and sometimes they have a few good panels. People-watching is a must.
Lady Gaga – “Paparazzi” video
The most ridiculous/brilliant bricolage of grotesque pop art aesthetics I’ve seen in a while. The Lady owes much to Gareth Pugh, Matthew Barney, and Marilyn Manson. (The former for the fashion, the latter two particularly for glamorizing physical maladies + medical paraphernalia.) Too bad the music isn’t as interesting as the imagery (cue comparison to Manson, again).
Cruel Black Dove – “Love Song” (Remix by Dean Rosenzweig)
IAMX’s Dean Rosenzweig remixes one of CBD’s best tracks. Download here for free from thee great RCRD LBL.
