Matt Lee: February 6, 2011

Top 10 February 6th 2011

No theme, just some of the random bits of greatness that have caught my ear this week!

  1. Wax Cylinder Recordings

I’ve been obsessively listening to old recordings and reconstructions of wax cylinders lately. In a sheer topical coincidence, I’ve found the first intentional recording of music; Handel’s “Israel In Egypt”, recorded 1888.

  2. Steve Martin & Earl Scruggs – Foggy Mountain Breakdown

My Father-In-Law is a virtuosic banjo player, really opened my eyes to the beauty and range of that instrument. Here’s the master Earl Scruggs , laying it out with another master, Steve Martin .

  3. Goblin – Deep Shadows

Italo Kitsch prog soundtrack band from the 70s, famously sampled by Justice , there is no denying the intense weirdness of their music. It’s so freaking cool. Check out the bass breakdown about a minute through!

  4. Freida Abtan – Orpheus In The Underworld

Soundcarver Freida Abtan ’s forthcoming album has been waiting in the wings for a long time. Straddling the gulf between hardcore EA-head acousmatic composition and underground digital steampunk jams, Abtan’s vision is lush, evocative and alive with movement and salacious color. Preview from the full length The Hands of the Dancer (drops February 14th) with the darkly transforming dream layers of “Orpheus In the Underworld”.

  • T Model Ford – Chicken Head Man

I love this man and I hope he lives forever! From the T Model Ford Bio:
    “T-Model’s 80-something years old … his Mississippi Driver’s License says he’s 84, his US Passport says he’s 87, and he says he’s 88 … so you decide.”

  • Band Name – Excitable Boy

Philly’s Band Name just dropped their first full length LP “Breakfast” on Self Aware. I reckon you should pay attention to this band because they are one awesome pile of awesomey awesome.

  • David and the Woods – Fantome D’Automne

Shades of shoegaze but with much more structure and energy, Valleyfield/Montreal’s David and the Woods have just released and epic set of music encased beautifully in a silkcreened wooden box! Look out for a full review coming soon, for now try out this slab of ear-massaging greatness.

  • nussr – Meth Not Math

Members of infamous Montreal neo-nowave party monsters Swamp Sex Robots have secreted out a sublimely necktwisting collection of lo-rez psychpunk timebenders with their new group nussr . Check out the decidedly math-y “Meth Not Math”.

  • Rape Revenge – Car Ride With A Vivisection Intern

Rape Revenge is a feminist, straight edge powerviolence/punk/grind band from Calgary. If you can’t handle that well then… you’ve got to ask yourself why. Intense, angry and strong.. a worthy counterbalance to the still male dominated/oriented music scene. Sad I missed them on their last tour.
Overt politics aside I love the sideways guitar lines and the dangerous sound, a pleasing brick to the brainpan!

  • Zoobombs – South Central Rock

The amazing amorphous psychedelic garage funk giants from Tokyo, Zoobombs are touring in North America again, don’t miss them!
