Matt Lee: February 20, 2011

Top 10 February 20, 2011

Making up for a lazy list last week, here’s 10 local projects happening now in Montreal that I’ve been enjoying this week. (Non-hierarchical.. I don’t like the “top” part of the top ten so much.)
There are many different things happening here in Montreal and as the lone Canuck on the BTO it’s my mission to tell you about many of them!

  1. Oen Sujet

Really interesting band on L-O-A-F carving out pointillistic prog jams so tightly scripted it’s actually exhilarating.

  2. The Eyebats

Fun, almost mathy band I’d never heard of before, check out the killer bassline on this track:

  • ttttttttttttttttttttt

ttttttttttttttttttttt has been around for awhile, part of the more “clatter and clang” type noise scene here, occupied by such bands as cian ethrie in the past. The tracks from this new album are very understated and kind of pretty, each in their own right.

  • Bad Uncle

Grande Guignol polka punk offshoot of larger locals The Unsettlers, Bad Uncle stands out as a tight, snarly party that always threatens total abandon.

  • Miss Fortune

Twin cannons of raw-ass garage punk, Lula Fortune and 1234tune slice that garage underbelly right open with razor sharp tunes.

  • Bad News Brown

One of the more innovative hip hop artists to come out of the 514, he was found dead in the street in Little Burgundy last week. RIP. We just lost a really great talent.

  • Dead Messenger

One of Montreal’s hardest working bands, Dead Messenger keep on creating tight rockers that have a real uplifting and honest vibe to them. They’re working on a new release and I’m totally stoked to get a copy.. meanwhile, eat this:

  • Merleā€™s Gitar Band

Yes, I do occasionally play in Merle’s Gitar Band . Nepotism is a fact of life, get over it!
I hold up MGB because, quite frankly they are one of my favorite bands of all time. Hovering somewhere between The Sun City Girls , The Butthole Surfers and Hank Williams , I’m always amazed at what the two genii at the controls ( Turi de Moth and Gooseball Brown ) come up with.

  • Hobo Cubes

Some really bliss-out quasi-experimental synth wank, I really dig the organic squishy levels of tripout in these recordings.

  • Video Nasties

Almost in the same vein as Hobo Cubes, but a bit “nastier” and lower-fi, really enjoyed this Video Nasties cassette: “The day the screaming stopped”
