Matt Lee: September 18, 2011

Top 10 September 18th, 2011

This week: a grab bag of brainlickingly good stuff to tickle the eyes and ears! catching up with some old faves of mine and discovering new ones!

  1. UNIVOX – Tonight

Absolutely one of the most compelling bands out there doing their own thing and doing it right, Philly’s UNIVOX have unleashed yet another slab of songwriting genius in the form of a new 7” Tonight . All the epic candour of their unique sound is there but new paths are being carved into their own personal rock candy mountain, I can’t wait to hear what the future holds for these guys!

  2. Satan’s Youth Ministers – Jump Rope Fever

This whole series of Alabama’s dark wizards of garage, Satan’s Youth Ministers is fucking nice, it’s some filthy, filthy rock and roll played the way the Devil intended it. Something good in the water down there in Muscle Shoals because band like SYM simply own, in a way that’s uniquely Southern.

  3. CRABE – Une Chandail

Here’s a cheapodelic video of Montreal’s un-wave masterclass of fucked up chords and blastbeats, CRABE ‘s “Une Chandail”, from their recent cassette release, 1982.

  4. Thomas Francis Takes His Chances – Fight Night

My favorite band outta Jersey City, Thomas Francis Takes His Chances have some amazingly weird new stuff out for you to snack on, gobble up the glory:

  5. James Leg – Have To Get It On

The Reverend James Leg , destroyer of the keyboard has put out a solo effort that’s a touch less grimy than his stuff with the legendary Black Diamond Heavies, but shows off his deep handle on soul, ripped blues and raw boogie. An absolute slab of diamond-hard southern rock n soul!

  6. The Hunches – Your Sick Blooms

Man, I just discovered this amazing Portland band only to find out they’ve called it quits. Sadness is… but they left behind some pretty inspirational and mindblowing jams!

  7. The American Devices – Got The Feeling It’s

LONG running band of tweakers and ne’er-do-wells from Montreal have released a new clutch of songs this summer on 3” cd with pieces of busted 7” records glued to em.. sweet!

  8. The Bad Doctors – Distractions

The Bad Doctors from Philly are this super rad blend of electro, punk and psych that sounds WAY better than what that sounds like. Also I can get behind anything that sounds like Bauhaus.

  9. Fried Clams – Have A Breakdown!

Hidden treasures of Montreal pt.1: Wow, dig the trashiness of this band! Wish they’d play locally more often because I can really get behind this giant over saturated no-fi sludgy garage!

  10. A Devil’s Din – Reset

Hidden Treasures of Montreal pt.2: A Devil’s Din first full length is chockablock with ear-bending psych, this track pulls out the punk and even floats some harmonized shredding over top of some 90’s style indie chords. Great stuff!
