Top 10 December 18th 2011

Top 10 December 18th 2011

  1. Pedal Powered Grind (Eaten at Allston DIY Fest)

Fuck Austin TX and the corporate bukkake session that is SXSW… Allston Mass., has a thriving DIY scene -(arguably the only creative milieu that matters in the post-industry era is DIY), so much so that they put on a festival that POWERS itself on DIY, using a people powered generator. This is a beautiful thing. Check out grinders Eaten and the pedal-generator in action at the 2011 edition.

  2. Black Piranha – Jouer Gelé

Local Montreal shred-tastic metal crazies Les Guenilles‘ drummer Jonathan Bigras and screaming noise wizard Nathalie Gélinas have just released a kick ass ep of small songs with big sharp teeth under the name Black Piranha. like Napalm Death pounding the crap out of a lower-fi Atari Teenage Riot with just a few shades reminiscent of Quintron & Miss Pussycat, this is some fresh nasty and I love it. Check out the track “Jouer Gelé”.

  3. Old woman playing slide blues with a lightbulb in Belarus meme

For an internet meme (usually in the same breath with the “Only way to play guitar” vid) it’s pretty sad and compelling. Musically there’s this weird modality that hovers between pentatonic blues catharsis and Eastern European harmonic minor “sadness”. The clutched lightbulb adds all the tension you could ever need.

  4. We Fled Cairo – Sharks Keep Moving, People Keep Dying

I played at what turned out to be Ottawa’s great post-math-punk band We Fled Cairo‘s last show last week. They are a great band who put out tons of energy live! They will be missed..

Sharks Keep Moving, Dolphins Keep Dying

  5. Collider – Tundra

Speaking of Ottawa, my DIY spies (who are everywhere at all times) have brought before me this behemoth sludge metal band from capital city, Collider. Me likey, always down with the heavy detuned riffs. (Tx Jauneattend!)

  6. The American Devices – Party Pooper

Montreal’s longest running punk band The American Devices are more vital and cool as they were 30 years ago. I’ve been passed a retrospective CD which I’ll donate more written time to soon, but for now suck on this tune until I get to it (“Party Pooper” was the closer at a recent show where the Devices just slayed with cool aplomb, legendary local cartoonist and band spokesweirdo Rick Trembles dropping jaws all around with his skill on the Strat.)

  7. Nomeansno – Oh Canaduh (Subhumans Cover)

This song has basically become my anthem this week. If I could find the original Subhumans version I would put it up here, but Nomeansno knock it out of the park, naturally.

“The big companies are milking us dry
Our corporation nation is soon gonna die
And in the capitol they’re sipping their tea
They care about their paycheques but not about you and me

    Oh Canaduh
    What’s wrong with you
    You better wake up
    Now what you gonna do”

  8. thisquietarmy – Revival

It’s gorgeously textured and narcotically hypnotic style is true to thisquietarmy‘s prolific output. Dark, dreamy with obliterated guitars, it sends me to a place bands like Flying Saucer Attack and Can did years ago. I’m looking for the new double LP Resurgence , hope to score it soon!

  9. Jesuslesfilles – Le Dernier Album de Beck

What do people have against spaces in their names? Anyways, Jesuslesfilles are a hard rocking new band with infectiously awesome garage-d out sound. It’s shambolic and hella fun, enjoy this track “Le Dernier Album de Beck” from their recent split tape with The Peelies on Planet of the Tapes.

  10. Meshuggah Beach Party – Chanukah Song

And finally, however you want to pronounce it, Happy Hannukah!
Here’s to another year of great and exciting new music!
