Teenage Fanclub – Four Thousand Seven Hundred And Sixty-Six Seconds – A Short Cut To Teenage Fanclub (Poolside)
This is an excellent 2003 compilation of a bunch of wonderful Teenage Fanclub songs ranging from their 1st single “Everything Flows” to 2000’s Howdy!, their then most recent album. Aside from it being a great place for beginners to start, all I’ll say about it is is that we played “Everything Flows” twice in a row right after their show last night on the ride home!
This Mortal Coil – It’ll End in Tears (4AD)
Black Flag – 1981 demos (no label)
Though I’ve been listening to Black Flag for two decades now, I’d somehow never heard these amazing demos. Most of these songs would later end up on their classic album Damaged, but these versions (to the best that I can tell, at least) seem to feature Dez Cedena on vocals on not Henry Rollins. That’s OK, though, as I’d always loved Cedena’s vocals on the versions of these songs that ended up on Everything Went Black and these versions are even rawer, more intense and wilder than the more well-known ones! It’s never been officially released, but you can find them here.
Double Negative – Daydreamnation (Sorry State Records)
The 2nd Lp from this North Carolina hardcore band is an improvement on the already crushing 1st record The Wonderful and Frightening World of Double Negative. And yes, any band that references albums by The Fall and Sonic Youth (though they sound like neither) is OK in my book. Regardless, there are 13 songs in 26 minutes.
Moe Tucker – “I’m Sticking with You”
In honor (?) of a video of her from an April tea party protest being unearthed and going viral yesterday, I found this video of Tucker fronting The Modern Lovers in 1974 and singing her Velvet Underground song “I’m Sticking with You”. This is to remind myself to separate the art from the artist and in this case, her politics. You can watch Tucker embracing the Tea Party here (she’s at 2:45 into the clip) and you can see the video of “I’m Sticking with You” here.
