Captain Beefheart R.I.P.
I was going to do a completely different list this week, but in light of the recent passing of DON VAN VLIET (i.e. CAPTAIN BEEFHEART), this week’s list is dedicated to him. Here are ten songs of my favorite songs of his. And thanks to my former roommate JIM DILLMAN for turning me on to him in the first place and letting me play his Trout Mask Replica and Clear Spot Lps all the time! Note the similarities between “Kandy Korn” and the BUZZCOCKS classic “Why Can’t I Touch It” as well as the similarities between “Dirty Blue Gene” and PJ HARVEY’s “Rid of Me”. His songs have also been covered by XTC, TREAT HER RIGHT, EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL and many other bands. His influence on modern music is incalculable.
