Matthew Berlyant: November 4, 2012

  1. Rodriguez – World Cafe Live (Philadelphia) – October 28, 2012

Please see my full review here.

  2. Those Darlins with Heavy Cream and Slutever – Johnny Brenda’s (Philadelphia) – October 27, 2012

Please see my full review here.

  3. A.C. Newman with The Mynabirds – First Unitarian Church (Philadelphia) – October 25, 2012

Please see my full review here.

  4. Those Darlins – “Summer’s Dead”

This is their side of a tour-only split single with Heavy Cream which I picked up at their show here last week. This song isn’t as strong as most of the other Those Darlins material that I’ve heard, but I still enjoy it and it’s growing on me. And check out that Halloween-appropriate cover, too!

  5. Heavy CreamSuper Treatment (Infinity Cat)

I’ve yet to hear this Nashville-based, all-female garage punk quartet’s debut album, but based upon this (their sophomore Lp), I’m gonna have to find it because this flat out rules. This blurs the line between garage and punk and often reminds me of Be Your Own Pet and even The Exploding Hearts on occasion. The recording is raw, the lyrics are about dysfunction of all stripes (and there’s even a women’s prison anthem called “Prison Shanks”) and a good time is had by all who listen to this.

  6. Those Darlins – “Mystic Mind” EP (Ow Wow Dang)

The A-side is a trippy number from last year’s great Screws Get Loose and kind of an odd choice for a single (yet it works). The B-side is a cover of Rockpile‘s “Pet You and Hold You”, a recent live staple. Jessi Darlin sings the A-side and Nikki Darlin sings the B-side. This record rules. Any questions?

  7. The Vile CherubsPost-Humurous Relief (Dischord/Cherubic Delusions)

When one thinks of late ’80s and early ’90s Dischord bands, The Vile Cherubs are usually not even mentioned amongst much better known artists like Fugazi, Soulside, Ignition, Shudder to Think, Jawbox, Nation of Ulysses and so on. However, they should be as their sound is somewhat akin to Gray Matter with an even more pronounced ’60s influence. I also hear bits that remind me of San Diego stuff from that time period like Pitchfork or even Mudhoney. This is fantastic stuff from future members of Nation of Ulysses, Fucking Champs, Young Ginns, Circus Lupus and others!

  8. Epic SoundtracksRise Above (Bar/None)

Though known for being in Swell Maps with his brother (the late) Nikki Sudden and for playing in bands like These Immortal Souls and Crime and the City Solution, the late Epic Soundtracks’ often goes overlooked. That’s a shame because of records like this fantastic 1992 album.

  9. HammockDeparture Songs (Hammock Music)

This is a wonderfully moody double-disc set of ambient space rock (also from Nashville, kind of a theme with this week’s list). I was made aware of them by Elizabeth Klisiewicz, so thanks to her!

  10. Bangs Sweet Revenge (Kill Rock Stars)

How did I miss this one when it came out a dozen years ago. This is a lost classic that any fan of Sleater-Kinney would appreciate. There’s more of a power-pop element at work here, though, as their amazing cover of Cheap Trick‘s “Southern Girls” illustrates.
