Albums I’ve been enjoying over the past few weeks.
Lost in the Trees – All Alone in an Empty House (Anti)
This folk symphony has been on repeat no matter where I go. Cheerful on the surface, the lyrics mainline right into your heart.
Get Back Guinozzi! – Carpet Madness (FatCat)
Jangly guitar pop from the south of France is a refreshing update of sound that I loved so much in the 90s. The retro-feeling album even comes supplied with a respectful cover of The Clash‘s version of “Police and Theives”.
Crocodiles – Sleep Forever (Fat Possum)
Dirty guitars, bright synths, modern surf-core explodes out of this new album from the Crocodiles.
Woom – Muu’s Way (Ba Da Bing!)
Memory Tapes – Seek Magic (Something in Construction)
I’m a little late on this slick 2009 debut from Dayve Hawk and still catching up. “Bicycle” has hints of New Order if they went on summer vacation in Brighton.
Juana Molina – Un Día (Domino)
Another album I just stumbled across, Un Día was the latest release that came out 2 years ago from Argentinean-born Molina. It is a complicated but listenable album full of loops and layers that is as captivating as the cover art.
Spoonfed Hybrid – Spoonfed Hybrid (Guernica)
An oldie in indie terms, this is Ian Masters 1993 post Pale Saints collaboration with Chris Trout. Guitar-rich, quirky, and sickly sweet – I broke down and bought this used and (perhaps) overpriced and am happy for it.
Unrest – Live in England, 1992 (Teenbeat)
With the reformation of Unrest in the 4-city East coast tour (Boo! from this Los Angelino), there must be a retrospective of sorts and you can find it on Live in England, 1992. A collection of songs from their four-stop tour through England, the live sets prove how good they were during their heyday.
Avey Tare & Kría Brekkan – Pullhair Rubeye (Paw Tracks)
In anticipation of Avey Tare’s solo album next month, this experimental album with Múm‘s front-woman plays with backwards-vocals and is worth a listen and a nod.
Fol Chen – Part II: The New December (Asthmatic Kitty)
Continuing what they began on their debut, the saga reads like a story from Jeff Noon. The album offers up some great gems when you dig in.
