The Owls Are Not What They Seem - Gnosis (Eleventh Key)

The Owls Are Not What They Seem Gnosis Eleventh Key
18 November 2014

Known for creating dark, atmospheric, at times brutal, soundscapes inspired by writer H.P. Lovecraft, Bobby Yagodich, leader of York, PA’s The Owls Are Not What They Seem, expands his sound with guest performers to create an aurally enthralling fourth full-length.

Featuring Horde of the Eclipse’s Max Shoop, Dustin Nispel from These Seeds and Brian Magar of Albatwitch and Layr, Gnosis delves into the deepest reaches of inner space, where the mind communes with ancient nefarious gods. Churning static melds with symphonic drones and crushing guitars, creating a cavern from which demonic voices screech through the blackness, though there are moments recalling the morbid incantations in Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut. This is the territory of Locrian and Equimanthorn via Xasthur, Bastard Noise and Actuary, where swirling chaos calls from the void in an effort to seduce your soul.

Most of us seek refuge from our nightmares, preferring to bask in the light rather than skulk in the shadows. The Owls Are Not What They Seem make music for those who revel in the blackness, who encourage the terrors to creep into their dreams. Turn out the lights and retreat into the bleak horror of madness.
