The group Walcot was formed in Chicago in 2016 and band leader Asher George is now based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Walcot’s first single “Dreamin’ Away” was released in 2021 and drew praise from music sites in Charlotte, Chicago, and beyond. The track received airplay on Chicago’s top college and non-commercial stations, including WNUR, WLUW, WZRD, CHIRP and Lumpen Radio.

Both “Dreamin’ Away” and the band’s second single, “Another Man,” will appear on Walcot’s debut EP, Songs For the Disenfranchised, to be released this spring.

According to Walcot band leader Asher George, “Another Man” arose from a little guitar part that he came up with that reminded him of something baroque or classical which naturally lent itself to a very melodic vocal line that was instantly reminiscent of something Paul McCartney would do.

The song’s lyrics were reverse-engineered from the song title, which George already had in mind. “Another Man” is a simple song with a relatable idea: not wanting to see the woman whom they desire with any man other than themselves. But, according to the songwriter, there’s more depth to it than that – he put himself in that other man’s shoes and lamented, “well, I’ve been there too.”

The harpsichord part on “Another Man” was impressively improvised by session musician Chris Mahieu during Walcot’s only rehearsal the day before recording. The song’s arrangement was played around the part, without frills.

As a part of Songs for the Disenfranchised, the track represents a bit of a low valley between the high peaks of the first and third tracks on the EP. It’s about the feeling of getting the short end of the stick and being left out in love. It’s happened to everybody and will continue to happen for as long as human nature remains as it is.

Big Takeover is pleased to host the premiere of the changeable “Another Man,” a track that alternates between a peppy pace and more reflective lulls.

Light and engaging vocals muse upon relationship troubles while the chime of harpsichord as a baroque pop element to the number, and the emphatically struck beat and cymbals crash move the song along into power pop territory.
