For the past five years, Baltimore-based indie pop outfit Super City has been building an impressive foundation — releasing two excellent albums (second LP Sanctuary dropped last fall) and supporting bands like White Denim, Bent Knee, Rubblebucket, Tera Melos, and Vetiver.
Today the band (Dan Ryan – vocals, guitar, Greg Wellham – vocals, guitar, Jon Birkholz – keyboards, guitar, vocals, Brian Brunsman – bass, vocals, and Ian Viera – drums, vocals) returns with new one-off single “High”, an explosive dance-rock pursuit on a collision course towards colorful walls of psychedelic pop. This is the exciting first listen of what Super City has to offer this year and The Big Takeover is mighty pleased to be hosting its premiere.
The sly to beautiful “High” is a cool mash-up of strutting and gritty indie rock guitar grooves, deep bass line rhythm, crisp percussion, hard-hit and pushing drum beat, with a touch of psych keyboards swirl and sharp to dreamily airy vocals. There’s even a brief, Queen-like vocal harmonizing break smack dab in the middle of the track to satisfy even the most picky music connoisseurs.
Greg Wellham sheds some light on the cheeky lyrical meaning behind “High”, explaining, _ “Dan had all the music written and once he told me the concept of a cocky teen trying weed for the first time, I came up with the lyrics really quickly. Probably because I knew plenty of those in high school.”_
Super City is playing Ottobar in Baltimore on Saturday, June 29th. It’s all all-ages show with Manners Manners and Peach Face. Check out the details HERE
