Emperor of Ice Cream is an Irish band that was first introduced on The Big Takeover radio show , hosted by Jack Rabid.

Around that time, the band was gearing up to release their debut album ‘No Sound Ever Dies’, the backstory of which is one worth telling. Almost 30 years after forming and 25 year after calling it quits, the band finally put out this record via Ireland’s own FIFA Records.

The same songs that Sony Records had shelved 25 years ago after signing the band – only better because this is the newly recorded ‘new and improved’ version.

This music is a thing of beauty, calling to mind so many artists, while sounding like none of them in particular. That can only be a good thing, of course. Sweet sounds to our ears, Emperor of Ice Cream is a band we will be watching throughout 2021 with several releases and videos planned over the next year. A mainstay of the FIFA Records label, their music has drawn the attention of music lovers, far and wide, to Ireland’s bustling indie music scene. Superb and invigorating music through and through. Well done lads!

Now based in Cork, Waterford, New York and Amsterdam respectively, Emperor of Ice Cream is a four-piece boasting the proven talents of Edward Butt (bass), John ‘Haggis’ Hegarty (vocals), Graham Finn (guitars), and Colum Young (drums).

Now they are back with their new 2-track ‘Weather Vane’ single and today we present you the video for alt-track ‘High Rise Low Rise’, directed by Veronica Terreblanche and reimagined by John Haggis.

This is a song about growing up among friends, who are viewed as misfits, oddballs and freaks. Nevertheless, the ideas and dreams that flow between these youth will change them all and the world around them.

“High Rise, Low Rise” is a gentle, yet passionate indie rock track that shimmers with a ticking drum beat, shines softly with gliding guitar chime, and creeps along with a shadowy bass line. The vocals are earnest and exclaimed, adding a dynamic potency to the song.

The music video follows the interior life of a lonely clown who is filmed in an indoor setting, but whose imagination roams wide, and to the circus tent he once occupied, and where he feels most at home.

Mixed and produced by Graham Finn, this single was mastered by Tom Volpicelli (The Who, Iggy Pop, The Alarm, Pat Benatar, The Bloodhound Gang) at The Mastering House in New Jersey.

The band has also announced that their debut record is getting a second pressing on vinyl and CD, to be released on the first anniversary of the original release. Entering the official Irish album charts at number 35, the LP topped the independent charts and was among the top 20 best-selling Irish releases of 2020.

“It’s a strange task, to make music with people you haven’t been in the same room as for over two decades, but the challenge was a welcome one. Overseen by Graham from his New York abode, the drums were beautifully recorded in Amsterdam at IJland Studios by Remko Schouten, who has previously worked with Pavement, Stephen Malkamus & The Jicks and Devendra Bernhardt,” says John Haggis.

“Assembling parts from home studios in Cork and Waterford, the final touches, edits and mixes were completed in NY. It’s an unusual way of doing things, but with the year that world has experienced collectively, not an uncommon one these days, unfortunately.”

Garnering a new legion of supporters around the globe, renewed demand for the band’s back catalog resulted in the release of a compilation album of their three early Sony-backed EPs (‘Overflow’, ‘William’ and ‘Know Me’), having sold out in the pre-digital ’90s. Reaching number 21 in the official album charts, the album also rose to number 3 in the independent charts. While the limited-edition physical copies were sold out on release day, it is still available as a digital download.

On August 24, the ‘Weather Vane’ single will be released digitally on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, and other platforms. In the meantime, the ‘No Sound Ever Dies’ LP can be obtained on vinyl, CD, cassette and digital download. Both releases can be obtained at Bandcamp
