Brooklyn songwriter Scott Klass, aka the Davenports, cannot be trusted. At least, that appears to be what the rock band — which originated in 2000 — is insinuating on its new single, “I Am Lying.” Or maybe the equivocator is someone else …
The possible answer was previously due to be revealed tomorrow, when the song gets a wide release. But fortunately for fans of the power-pop vets who read the Big Takeover, Klass kindly granted us the exclusive premiere of the song and its accompanying video a day early. More clues and background on the song abound in a statement that Klass provided to the Big Takeover:
“This is essentially a ‘what you don’t know won’t hurt you’ story,” he said about “I Am Lying.” “Every relationship strikes its own balance of logic and emotion. Sometimes, being open with your partner about something like having a drink with an old friend, when there’s no logical reason for your partner to feel threatened, should be harmless. But, no great mystery, sometimes logic doesn’t count for shit in relationships. So this song’s narrator, while ruminating over how it shouldn’t be a big deal, decides that it’s just easier to brush it under the rug and bypass an unnecessary blowup.”
Referencing a separate band whose members include Klass, Winterpills vocalist/guitarist Philip Price and Fountains of Wayne lead vocalist/guitarist Chris Collingwood, he continued: “The song was originally written for a would-be side project with my Look Park bandmates — a deliberate attempt on my part to write something much more direct than I usually do, with a somewhat alt-country delivery. Since that project is still on hold, I just used it myself instead.”
