Nashville drummer/songwriter/singer Matt North may have started his career in middle age, but his second solo album, Bullies in the Backyard, deals with a conflict he fought over a serious issue concerning the well-being of his child learning at school.

“Last Angry Man,” whose video premieres today with the Big Takeover, is one of 10 songs written under the cloud of a seven-year lawsuit North’s family ultimately won and that alleged violations against his son’s special needs by Metro Nashville Public Schools. The U.S. District Court verdict set precedents in Tennessee that now benefits families facing similar challenges over their child’s education.

Bullies in the Backyard will be released Friday by Round Badge Records on CD, as a download and on streaming platforms. Mixed by Grammy-winner Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Wilco, Los Lobos) and mastered by Pete Lyman (Tom Waits, Chris Stapleton, Barry Gibb), Bullies in the Backyard features North on vocals and drums, guest appearances from Jonny Polonsky and Jesse DeNatale alongside Matt’s core band of Nashville A-listers. Members of Lucinda Williams’, Shelby Lynne’s and Michelle Shocked’s bands appear in the video along with North.

North explained the song’s inspiration in an exclusive interview with the Big Takeover: ”I was nicknamed ‘The Last Angry Man’ by my former manager in Los Angeles. He insisted it was a high compliment, and maybe that’s true, considering the source. Still, he never bothered to ask if I wanted to be called by that nickname. I didn’t, and that’s likely why his nickname is ‘former manager.’

“Similar to other titles for songs I’ve written, this one sat in my notes for years,” North continued. “During and after the 2016 election cycle, I observed all kinds of ‘angry men’ in the news, in my city and my neighborhood. I tried to imagine myself in their shoes and what might be causing all the unrest. So the opaque images I saw in my mind for each of these guys became the landscape for my opaque approach to sing this song’s story.”
