Teddy Grey’s video for “TV Mom” depicts just one of the romantic mishaps that the Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter brings into focus on his recently released double-album The Great Failed Romances of the Twentieth Century.
On the concept album, Grey reflects on how celebrity-driven culture originated at the dawn of the 20th century when the stars of stage and screen suddenly became as famous and beloved as the characters they portray. Their larger-than-life personalities and antics made them known to the world — but when two stars would link up for a romantic pairing, chaos would inevitably ensue.
The album contains 30 songs featuring numerous guest vocalists and instrumentalists. Grey takes a satirical yet heartfelt look at some of the most widely discussed couples of years past, from the iconic (Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy) to the moronic (Vanilla Ice and Madonna), and from the rumored (James Dean and Marlon Brando) to the all-too-real (Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton).
Today, the Big Takeover exclusively premieres Grey’s wacky video for “TV Mom.” It revolves around Barry Williams and Florence Henderson, famous for playing Greg and Carol, respectively, on The Brady Bunch. Part of the behind-the-scenes lore surrounding the show is that, when Williams was 16, he asked Henderson on a date in real life. For the song, Grey adopted the perspective of Williams when he asked his TV mother out on the real-life date. Henderson supposedly tried to laugh it off, underscoring both the perviness and the innocence of the situation.
Grey’s “TV Mom” video was filmed by Trevor Bukowski and Emmett Goebel. Check it out right here:
But enough about The Brady Bunch. Grey recently joined the cast of The British Invasion, a show featuring songs from dozens of groundbreaking British bands that crashed U.S. shores in the 1960s. The show will be presented in over 40 U.S. cities beginning this month and continuing throughout the spring.
