Album premiere: Are We There Yet? by The Turnback

The Turnback
25 September 2015

“From the outset, we knew that we wanted Are We There Yet? to be a progression from our first album Drawn In Chalk, but we also didn’t want the album to sound like it came from a completely different band,” said Kenny Sherman, singer, songwriter, guitarist and bassist for the New York power-pop trio The Turnback. “One thing we decided was that all the lyrics had to come from a more personal space and each one needed to carry an emotional punch that the average listener could relate to.

“Musically, we wanted a more powerful sound but we didn’t want to lose the melodies and vocal harmonies that people liked on Drawn In Chalk, added Sherman, who shares vocal and writing duties with guitarist/keyboardist Todd Giglio and drummer/guitarist/keyboardist Barry Nagel. “We rented a rehearsal studio in Whitestone, New York, for six months, converted it into a makeshift recording studio and worked on getting the sound right and recording the tracks.

“The end result is that all the songs on Are We There Yet? are just the core of the band — guitars, bass, drums and vocals,” he said. “No keyboards, no strings, no extravagant production tricks. It’s exactly what we wanted it to be, which is an aggressive but catchy, melodic rock album with uncompromising lyrics and a lot of vocal harmonies that can be played live exactly the way we recorded it.”

What he said! Are We There Yet?, which comes out next Friday, October 2, is a power-pop lover’s dream. We are now kicking ourselves for missing their performance at the Son Of Powerpopaholic Festival in Brooklyn last week. Not gonna make that mistake again. If you dig Fountains Of Wayne, Sloan, etc., feast your ears on this exhilarating new LP!
