Dryer’s roots go back to the early 1990s, when drinking buddies Rachael Sunday (bass/vocals) and Bob Carlton (guitar/vocals) met and started a rock band in Saratoga Springs, New York to play songs that each had written. Rachael had a more melodic indie-rock approach, while Bob liked to play punk rock. Two completely different styles of songwriting, but it all seemed to work. After a few drummers didn’t work out, Joel Lilley joined the band and the trio recorded its first full-length, Saturday In Vain.
Dryer quickly became a small club and college radio staple throughout the United States, and at one point garnered attention from Atlantic Records, recording demos for the record label. Throughout the ’90s and early 2000s, they released multiple recordings on various labels before breaking up in 2002.
But years later, they regrouped. In 2010 Dryer became a band again to celebrate the release of their compilation Strut and Fret. And in 2014, Bob met Brian Akey, the former bass player for The Winterpills, who had recently moved to Saratoga Springs. Brian’s musical background found him touring with bands like Cake and Fountains of Wayne, and he had played in a project with Frank Black of The Pixies. Dryer brought Brian on as the second guitarist.
Dryer has now released their first collection of new songs since 2002, the EP Bright Moon Bright Sun.
“The title Bright Moon Bright Sun comes from a line in the song Book of Maps. It’s a reference to starting new but how you’re always connected with the past,” says Carlton.
The EP is available through all major digital download and streaming sites and will be be available on vinyl in the first half of 2017. It was recorded in Saratoga Springs at Starling Studios with Jason Brown and completed over a few weeks in late 2015.
