Periscope at Midnight is the latest release from the married duo of Allan and Barb Vest, otherwise known as doubleVee. The EP includes two re-imaginings of Allan’s songs from his time with The Mints. “Submarine Number Three Vee” is their sea-salted and extended take on “Submarine No. 3”, the opening track on the Mints’ 2000 album The Dream that Stuff Was Made Of (which celebrates the 25th anniversary of its release this year.) “Maybe Tonight (What’s Inside of Me?)” is their mood-modulated and sonically enriched version of “Inside of Me,” from the 2006 album Drowaton.
“We are so grateful to release Periscope at Midnight. We finished demo versions of the songs last year, dipping our toes back into creating new music following Allan’s diagnosis with cancer, shortly after our last album was released. He’s recovered and is being closely monitored, but it’s definitely made us even more aware of the limits of time and how we want to spend it. In these troubling times, we’re determined to not let anything stop us from releasing new music and hope it resonates with our listeners.”
Periscope at Midnight follows their 2017 debut album The Moonlit Fables of Jack the Rider, 2019 EP Songs for Birds and Bats and 2022 album Treat Her Strangely. That last release included “Your Love Is It Real?,” featured in episode seven of season one of Tim Burton, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar’s Netflix series Wednesday.
Their new EP introduces four additional songs, including the garage-band single “Everyone’s Lonely Under the Sea,” with detuned guitar and a rollicking bass line. New tracks also include the upbeat caper of “Diamond Thumb,” the bossa nova waking dream ballad “Natural Selection” and the shifty mid-tempo rocker “Modern Times.”
Produced by Allan and Barb in their home studio, Periscope at Midnight was co-mixed by the pair and Wes Sharon of 115 Recording, with Wes handling the mastering. Allan performed vocals, guitars, bass, cello and drums/effects programming, with Barb performing vocals and synths. Guest performers include violinist Brent Williams and trumpeter Christi Wans. The EP’s artwork was created by Salt Lake City-based artist Grant Fuhst.
Periscope at Midnight will be available digitally and on a limited edition compact disc directly from the band via their website.
