Dog Island; Photo Credit: Hannah Spector
Birthed as a recording project. Composed, produced, and performed by Floridian creative Dave Hanson. Home recorded. The sound of the album dips into many spheres. There’s experimental elements in the tones – they’re mostly found sounds that are looped or modulated in some fashion or another. There are AM radio snippets, old Casio keyboards, people talking backwards, toy noise makers, electronic percussion, and more that make up most of the sonic textures throughout. The instrumentation, melodies, and song structures lean towards the psych, folk, and/or pop genres. The rhythms are breezy. At their core they are adventure songs.
Dog Island is a solo trip. There’s a drum in the passenger seat and a strange rattling noise coming from somewhere in the trunk. An airy melody can be heard floating out of the driver side window. There’s an elbow patched with flannel drumming on the car door and an array of colored soaps that have made a map on the rear windshield. It’s washed away where the wipers hit, but the X remains, as does the faith.
