The Edelweiss story began in early 2010 with 16-year old Niko Porlier (guitar/vox) and his brother, 14-year old Coby (drums), collaborating on music at home together. Through friends, the Porlier brothers were introduced to Tommy Vitale (bass/vox) and shortly thereafter, Tony Young (guitar) completed the band's lineup.
Since then, in just over one year together, the Stroudsburg, PA-based indie-pop band has seen their local fan base explode, played to crowds sixteen thousand strong at large-scale regional music events, and headlined high-profile clubs in New York City.
The members of Edelweiss draw their influences primarily from a combination of bands like Foals, Bloc Party, Minus the Bear and others while also drawing upon a sound that hearkens back to the original post-punk movement spearheaded by bands such as Joy Division.
Produced, engineered, and mixed by Jeremy Sklarsky (Freelance Whales, Teenage Fanclub, The Morning Benders) at Threshold Studios in New York City, Edelweiss' debut EP, Pre-Columbians, is set to release on September 13, 2011.
"A year ago we thought nothing like this could happen ever in our time being together as a band," said bassist Tommy Vitale, "This is a big step in our career and we are completely ecstatic to be sharing this with our fans who have been waiting patiently."
Their new single "Icarus" is available now on iTunes, but you can get it free, exclusively from The Big Takeover!
"We wrote "Icarus" with an upbeat, but dark, dancey theme in mind," notes Vitale. " It’s our first song, I think, that’s synth-heavy and it’s definitely more reliant on the synth than any of our other songs. "Icarus" was the last song we wrote before heading into the studio, and it’s probably the best indicator for what the future will sound like for Edelweiss out of all five tracks on the EP."
