Chicago soul singer and songwriter Nick McMillan made his debut as nicholas last fall with the lush and layered experimental soul record HEAT ISLAND EFFECT. After sharing the standalone single “loose leaf” last month, he’s been leaning into a more stripped down sound with his latest run of singles this spring and summer. The Big Takeover is proud to premiere his newest single “Loose Leaf” today below.
McMillan said the song idea “began with an ear worm riff my friend and roommate Steven Rutledge came up with. Marcus loved the riff. All of us had just moved in together and this was the first tune that we all three collaborated on. Steven then assembled the chords for the verse and Marcus attached a bridge and the song was built! Fun fact: Wyatt Waddell crafted the background vocals on the bridge randomly on a sunny day at Povos Art Studio in Chicago. Marcus still can’t get the riff.”
