Salt Lake City’s Anthony Pena has been working on his solo music for years since relocating from the East Coast. Some of the initial ideas for his upcoming debut album 4 stem back to when he lived in NYC, including a phone recording taken at a park that’s woven into his new single. The Big Takeover is proud to share the latest single from his upcoming album, “M4TH,” a soulful longing in which desire and reality don’t add up.
Since moving back to Utah a few years ago, Pena has embraced his love for Prince and built his home studio, where he writes, records, engineers, and produces his own music. While largely a solo effort, he also enlisted Vishal Nayak (Nick Hakim, Helena Deland) on drums and sound design and Chris Gehringer (The Last Dinner Party, Turnstile) for mastering.
Pena said of the single,
“This song features various voice memos from 2022 when I last lived in New York. In the recording, you can hear a singer from a live Salsa band go back and forth from English to Spanish as she cues the group. My song is about this same duality. I started noticing the yellow fall leaves against the cold black mulch at Liberty Park here in Salt Lake City (where we filmed the song’s music video). I juxtaposed the sound of my local New York park from 2022 against my local park here in Utah. A walk through a park where memories of the past can start to flood you.”
Anthony Pena will be releasing his debut album 4 on April 4.
