Dar Williams is a songwriter, author and mentor. Hummingbird Highway is her 13th album and her first to be released on Righteous Babe Records, her friend Ani DiFranco’s label, on September 12. Drawing on her experience as a playwright, Williams populates her latest album with nuanced characters that come alive in the space of a few minutes. Longtime listeners know that Williams and her music are always up for those kinds of conversations that glimpse the brightest colors, woven into the larger context of time.
Of “Olive Trees,” Dar Williams remarks:
“Back in 2010 I heard about a beautiful olive grove in Northern California. The trees were destined to grow for over a millennium thanks to their careful placing and planting back in the early twentieth century. All I could think was ‘Here? Wait. Here??’ I thought of the olive trees that have been growing since the birth of democracy all around the Mediterranean Sea and wrote ‘Olive Tree’ while I was thinking about these strong, adaptive forces of life with deep roots and a shared abundance, the sacred trees and democracy itself.”
