Magenta Sunshine
For Asheville natives Magenta Sunshine, inspiration waits around every corner. It’s almost as if the band’s collective ear is tuned to the wind as it snakes between the mountains. Surely, there must be secrets in those hills. Ancient truths yet to be revealed to those of us at sea level. On the cusp of releasing their next album Clarity, the band has shared the intimate ballad “See You When I Can.”
Magenta Sunshine has made a name for themselves with their electrifying live performances and post-genre approach to crafting songs. Clarity is about the soul’s journey of finding itself. Songwriter David Morris Einzig guided the group through recording sessions in Asheville and New Orleans with producer Keenan McRae (H.E.R., Donald Harrison). And the result is an album that feels fresh, nostalgic, and insightful all at the same time.
“See You When I Can” never deviates from simple ballad structure, but it never feels incomplete. Voice and acoustic guitar deliver simple truths about the human condition and experience. Morris Einzig sings “The world was built off people who wanted more than they had.” Since there’s a simple musical backing to this track, the songwriter is free to state things in plain language. The song feels like seeing those first rays of sunlight at the end of a long, long night.
On an album called Clarity, “See You When I Can” feels like that exact moment of enlightenment. The noise of structure fades away, and what’s left is understanding. Magenta Sunshine does a beautiful job of capturing the basic truths of human experience and distilling them into a three minute folk song. And if they can do that with grace and ease, there’s really no limit to what could come next.
