New York City’s Dead Heavens, the psych-rock project of guitarist and frontman Walter Schreifels (Vanishing Life, Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools, Quicksand, and more) is set to drop its first full-length album, Whatever Witch You Are, on June 16th via Dine Alone Records.
The band has an extensive hardcore, punk, and post-hardcore pedigree: in addition to Schreifels, there’s guitarist Paul Kostabi (Youth Gone Mad, White Zombie, Psychotica), bassist Nathan Aguilar (Cults), and drummer Drew Thomas (Youth of Today, Bold, Into Another).
Whatever Witch You Are fully stands apart from those earlier projects and plays effortlessly as a new-classic blues rock album – a new-millennium Fresh Cream or Let it Bleed – only with sharp-angular sounds and noticeable psych inflections.
The Big Takeover premieres “Adderall Highway”, a prime cut from the album, which Schreifels describes in the following way: “The idea for “Adderall Highway” was born at the speed of roughly 110-120 mph, somewhere between Berlin and Düsseldorf. We were on our first European tour and taking advantage of Germany’s wonderful autobahn system to make up for some lost time between shows. To drive the autobahn responsibly one must be laser focused on the flow of traffic and rules of the road. ADHD has no place behind the wheel. As we took in the scenic beauty of the German countryside, “Adderall Highway” is the riff that played through in my mind.”
