“‘Convince Me’ is written about a personal experience of mine,” said Dream Cult frontman Hayden Boyd on this cut from their upcoming debut LP, Weekend. “I was in this long-term relationship that I was really bad at and, of course, I didn’t realize it until it was too late. I wrote this song in my room at my old apartment and immediately tracked it and took it to Justin’s house (Justin Moreira, guitar, piano, vocals). We all sat down with it and added in some ideas and it all came together.
“This record has been a work in progress since the beginning of this band,” said Jackson, MS-based Boyd, who in 2012 enlisted brothers Cody and Travis Bass (drums and guitar respectively) to form Dream Cult (Moreira and bassist Salar Almakky joined soon after). “We’ve been writing these songs and planning this out for a while now. We took a trip in January 2015 to Nashville to record with Michael Freeman at The Brown Owl. We tracked drums and bass in the studio and then recorded everything else in our drummer’s bedroom.
“All of the songs on this record are about experiences during growing up. From the crazy nights to the shitty breakups, it’s all there,” he said. “I know I’m not the only one who has experienced some of these things, and I want the songs to be relatable in a way that tells people that whatever your going through or whatever is going on won’t matter later on in life.”
Weekend comes out July 29 on Old Flame Records.
