Formed in 2014 in Philadelphia by Mariel Beaumont, Church Girls is an indie rock/post-punk group on a quest to tap into listeners’ emotional marrow and explore the ways we work to become better humans a little at a time. Their 2018 single “Young Planes” premiered on PopMatters, who described it as a “restless, urgent piece that fuses the fire and burning punk zeal of early Sleater-Kinney with the post-millennial anxieties and indie melodies of Angel Olsen.”
Church Girls’ 2016 EP Thousand Lives received local praise for its “introspective lyrics that complement pop melodies beautifully” (WXPN) and their debut LP Hidalgo was described as “melodic and rejuvenating … underscored by hypnotizing vocals which feel both vintage and fresh” (Culture Collide).
The Big Takeover is excited to premiere “Dead Wood”, another track from the band’s forthcoming EP Home, recorded with Scott Solter (Spoon, Superchunk) and due out September 7th via Chatterbot Records.
“Dead Wood” runs free in the fields of Americana, graced with heartfelt, wistfully bittersweet vocals, subdued, jangling percussion, curling to shimmering guitar lines, and a measured drum pace. And then suddenly, in a joyful sonic surprise, a burst of guitar fireworks and punchy drums catapult the song into blazing hot indie rock territory.
Church Girls’ Mariel Beaumont (vocals, guitar) reveals details about the song, stating, ““Dead Wood” is the first song I wrote for this album after a three-day drive out to Colorado I did by myself. I’d been reflecting on a relationship that collapsed and uncovering the mistakes I made along the way. The song is about the inevitable pain you feel in realizing you were just as culpable for the demise as the others involved. It’s my personal favorite from the record.”
