Birds in the Night is the debut album by Austin-based Benjamin Cissner, formerly Windsor for the Derby and Tiny Vipers.
The album is literate, dark n’ dusty Americana, with a bit of noise and nods to Harry Nilsson, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Elliott Smith, Townes Van Zandt, Michael Gira, Richard Thompson, Lee Hazlewood and the like. It was recorded and co-produced by Matthew Melton at his Fuzz City studio in Austin.
“Division”, the second single off the new LP, is a morose and bitter little ditty, with unsettling shifts from minor to major, and a melancholy melodica hook that brings reggae star Augustus Pablo to mind. Dig it:
Birds In The Night will be available on LP and for download on April 22. Pre-order it here. Benjamin Cissner & The Apologies hit the road in May with Scott Yoder (formerly of The Pharmacy).
