Hawk is the musical brainchild of artist David Hawkins, the abstract painter, co-founder of the avant-garde ‘happening’ group The Black Mountain Collective, and also leader of the orchestral folk group Be. The band is set to re-release a remastered version of their potential ‘future classic’ I’m On Fire on November 25th. In addition to the rootsy grit of Be, Hawk heavies up the proceedings by adding in a dose of garage rock, a touch of psych, plus shades of classic Rolling Stones and even a bit of early- AC/DC riffage.
The Big Takeover is proud to premiere the album’s title track today, of which Hawkins says, “It’s hard to capture songs with words, but it’s about the power of love and desire and passion; the electricity coursing through our veins, and the cathartic nature of rock and roll. I had been thinking about the intense power of nature after seeing these huge tornadoes and forest fires on the news, and I had the thought of manifesting as something that powerful. Sometimes it feels that way in life, you know? Like you’re on fire with love? When your energy and emotion will barely fit in your body. Or when we’re playing music and can hardly contain ourselves. And I like the ambiguity of the last line, “I see my savior in your eyes.” Do I mean that the savior is you, or is it the reflection of myself I’m seeing in your eyes? It can go either way.”
Worth noting, Hawkins is already recording the next Hawk album (which should arrive in the spring) that is confirmed to feature legendary guests such as Gary Louris of The Jayhawks, Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, R.E.M., Big Star), and longtime Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas.
For now, get down with “I’m On Fire”…
