Beautiful things happen when music from different parts of the world get to commingle and cross-pollinate. In some sense, the most interesting leaps in musical evolution are a result of this type of inter-cultural, sonic hybridization. Case in point: the latest release from Mouthwatering Records Dub darling, Dubokaj as the collaborative project Dubokaj Meets Fortune Shumba.
Dubokaj’s music is a hybrid anyway which he calls Alpine Dub. It draws influences as far-ranging as Swiss mountain music and fuses them with tropical bass signifiers, crafting something very quirky and personal out of it. On this particular EP, he joined forces with South African vocalist Fortune Shumba and added another evolutionary step to his output. The best way to describe it would be something like Lover’s Bass. It has a bit of reggae in it, but it’s fully electronic. It’s very dubby but it also utilizes the auto-tune effect in a very unique way. It’s radio-friendly, kinda, but it could just as well shake up things at an underground jam.
Today The Big Takeover premieres the laid-back, but highly addictive summer anthem “Trinidad Babies”. Dubokaj Meets Fortune Shumba will be released this Friday on Mouthwatering Records
