Hailing from Los Angeles, Vast Asteroid is a supergroup of sorts, made up of The Warlocks former bassist Mimi Star, seminal Mancunian punk-rock band Slaughter And The Dogs drummer Mark Reback, and singer and guitarist James Poulos.
Tracked during a magical week at the legendary Rancho de la Luna studios in Joshua Tree, CA by producer/engineer Andy Freeman, their self-titled debut is able to instantly bring together the lovers of shoegaze, space rock, Britpop, and heavier stuff like stoner and desert rock.
The Big Takeover is delighted to premiere the video for the sweeping rocker “Encrypted”, about which director Christian Stephen comments, “Approaching the video for “Encrypted”, we wanted to show a different side of the band and the songs – stepping away from the cinematic and darker influences in our previous works for “Poison Fang” and “Spacegaze”, we wanted to show the band’s energy while playing live, as well as the human side of the dark wizardry that is Vast Asteroid.”
Singer and guitarist James Poulos affirms, “After you make a record it’s time to step back out of that shell and onto the stage. When you’re playing somewhere you know is going to sound right and the crowd is ready to go, it’s that much easier to relax into the adrenaline. In some ways “Encrypted” is the simplest song on the record, in other ways it’s the strangest or furthest out on the limb, so it felt right to let a document of that performance represent it on video. We finally got Christian back in the US after Sundance, so it was really a celebration all around.”
