“Let The Light Shine In” is the second video from the debut 7” by Grant Earl Lavalley; it’s a continuation, of sorts, of the story begun in the mysterious and unsettling video for “Dark Love”, which came out in April. In this only slightly less ambiguous new video, Lavalley portrays the roles of the good, the bad, and the assassin — all within walking distance from the desert shack he calls home, a cabin on the dirt backroads of Joshua Tree, in California’s Mojave desert.
Originally from Ohio, Lavalley spent his formative years in San Francisco, making art and playing in punk bands before retreating to grow cannabis on a Northern California mountaintop. It was alone on that mountain that he began writing his pensive, darkly poetic songs. Upon moving to Joshua Tree, a chance encounter with songwriter and producer M. Craft (Jarvis Cocker) led to new recordings for an album slated for release early next year on the Exit Stencil label.
Comparisons to Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Bill Callahan and Nick Cave are apt, but Lavalley’s got his own weird thing goin’ on; we expect to hear much more from this western gothic recluse.
