A guitarist plugs into their amp. A mixing board comes into view. Next, a voice cuts through: “Ok, we’re rolling!”
This is Remain: a 6-piece alt-rock band from Denton, Texas. Their sound? A seamless blend of free-flowing and soaring melodies, emotive lyrics, and just a tinge of rockabilly. Their latest release “No Way to Die” is compelling from the start. The rhythmic movement sets the stage for a sugar-sweet lead guitar tone, which then carves the path ahead.
Released under A Diamond Heart Production, “No Way to Die” is their follow up to the 2024 release “Season of Youth”. It is another timeless single through which Remain conveys presence, and devotion, along with an inexplicable/unbreakable connection.
The lyrics are poetic and ripened with life experience. The instrumental break is a nice reprieve that pulls us into the chorus and references earlier motifs of the song. As “No Way to Die” progresses, the song’s propulsion becomes more of a hard hitting, visceral kind of persistent beat. As the song pushes forward further, so do we, emotionally. We get swept up in the momentum as the band turns the idea of a ‘promise understood’ into a pure soundscape. This is raw, this is real.
Musically, Remain has intricately woven a tapestry of sound, where familiar melodic threads resurface, intertwining seamlessly with fresh strands of inspiration. One of the most noticeable sounds we take away from “No Way to Die” is the delivery from lead singer Caleb Coonrod. The inspiration from Bruce Springsteen is apparent in this, as the vocals take on a charming sort of tired, ragged, wizened tone, inside of fresh alternative/heartland rock.
Ultimately, “No Way to Die” explores resilience and enduring love against all odds.
