The Chicago power pop band Time Thieves collectively has decades of experience playing in punk bands among the four members. On songs like “Remember I Forgot,” it shows. With chunky riffs, bombastic drums, and sing-along-ready verses and choruses, the band packs a lot in just under three minutes. The Big Takeover is proud to premiere Time Thieves’ music video for “Remember I Forgot,” off their upcoming EP Come Home, out May 6th.
Time Thieves first formed when frontman Jonathan Pool (guitar, lead vocals) and Mike Oberlin (drums) tossed around the idea of forming a power pop band after spending years in Chicago’s punk scene. Since then, the band welcomed Annie Saunders on bass and Tim Reynolds on lead guitar, both of them sharing backup vocal duties.
Pool says of the single and video:
“Remember I Forgot” is about exploring the futility of creating new problems by rehashing old solutions that never worked in the first place. We shot the video in one day in late February. We wanted to shoot a video that featured the band actually playing our instruments as well as loosely incorporating a narrative arc around the song. Personally, I can’t stand music videos that just feature a band fake-playing their instruments for 3 minutes — I need a hook, goddamnit! Having my good friend Mustafa play a character who wakes up in an unfamiliar place and must wend his way through a confusing and ultimately mind-bending reality was a perfect way to create an (in my opinion) interesting storyline, as well as introduce him to the world as our new drummer.
Come Home is the Time Thieves’ first larger release in years since releasing their debut album Space in 2020, and “Remember I Forgot” combines the best of the power pop genre, recalling Weezer’s early days, The Rentals, and Grandaddy.
Like the rest of the upcoming EP, “Remember I Forgot” reflects the band’s growth in writing concise, 2-4 minute power pop songs full of crunchy guitar riffs and catchy vocals. Come Home will be released on May 6th.
