One great way to defeat that unholy trinity of demons often faced by the music maker, – writer’s block, lethargy, and procrastination,- is to do what Sam Holden has done with his current musical vehicle 3 Year Project. With a self-imposed mission to release a new single every 4 weeks for the next 2 years, he has no choice but to stay creative and keep the songs coming. And proof, if proof were needed, that it is a smart move comes in the form of his latest single, “Feel Love.”
Although his music is often driven by a more alt-rock fire or an indie, Britpop-ish cool, this time out, he takes an almost balladic approach. Using acoustic understatement to ground the song, this spaciousness serves as the perfect way to frame to underline the lyrics’ sense, sensibility, and sentiment.
But rather than merely allowing it to remain in the more folky or singer-songwriter realms, he swathes the song in deft string washes and piano motifs and drives it with the more expected beats and bass. It’s a song that sits in a space between the solo artist and the full band sound, combining the strengths of each whilst avoiding their pitfalls and cliches.
The result is a song that walks sure-footedly along the rock and pop divide, juggling folk finesse and orchestral grandeur as it goes. That is one hell of a balancing act to try to pull off, but Sam Holden proves to be the most dexterous of music makers.
