Pop music used to be seen as the poor relation of rock music, well, at least by elitist snobs, generally ones with long hair and a subscription to Widdley Guitar Monthly. But, as bands like 45ACIDBABIES have continued to prove, pop music, in its modern form, can be every bit as interesting and adventurous, forceful and full of life as its more sonically overweight younger sibling.
Paint The World Pink sees the *Dutch, multidiscipline collective continue to underline and reinforce the point, 12 songs that talk of both timely and timeless issues. Whereas rock music has often been fixated on sci-fi adventure and silly fantasy themes and turned them to pointless and stoggy ends, 45ACIDBABIES turns the script on its head and uses those same settings and scenarios to talk about neurodiversity, queerness, self-love, and the power of community.
So, it’s a concept album, of sorts, or at least an album of concepts, one that takes in the gnashing guitars and dancefloor grooves of “Sur5,” the blends of hazy, trippy, lysergic sonics and industrial pop power that are “Running In2 U,” the modern take on the motorik drive of “Too L8 To Call Back,” and the anthemic pop-rock of “Only Class6 From Now On.”
It is safe to say that Paint The World Pink covers a lot of ground both musically and thematically; it is a voice for the moment, tackling issues that are both poignant and powerful and making music that out pops pop, adds a fresh sheen to the clubland aesthetic and even gives rock music a run for its money.
What a breath of fresh air.
