Black Market Karma (with Rauri Meehan) - Aping Flair (Flower Power Records)

21 December 2022

“Aping Flair” acts as a second taster from the forthcoming album Friends In Noise, the eleventh long-player from Black Market Karma. It is an album showcasing various collaborations between the band’s leading man Stanley Belton and friends and colleagues with whom he has surrounded himself over the years.

And, despite the range of players and influences at work here, the sound is still based on the sound of an alternative ’60s; the soundtrack to the decade had it take a different path. But only slightly different, as in Black Market Karma’s music in general, and certainly here on “Aping Flair” in particular, you can hear that same slightly spaced-out vibe threaded through the later Beatles output, a blissed-out Summer of Love floatiness and an infectious psychedelic pop lushness. Or imagine if Britpop had been invented in 1965 and immediately chilled out on a much better class of drugs!

Joining Belton for this song is Rauri Meehan, someone usually found making music with the likes of Tess Parks, who featured on a previous BMK single, “The Sky Was All Diseased”, and also fronting Belakiss.

You only have to wait until early January for the whole album to come within easy reach, but if ever there was a song that was going tide you over, it is this, and then a literal fistful of additional fun, fab and groovy waxings will join it to make the completed album. One hell of a Christmas present if you ask me.
