Miss Massive Snowflake – Your Favorite Band (North Pole)

Miss Massive Snowflake-Your Favorite Band
1 May 2021

It’s been five years since this eccentric outfit, led by Billings, MT (via Portland, OR) singer/guitarist Shane de Leon, released their fifth LP The Final Photograph. The core trio of de Leon, drummer/keyboardist/producer Andy Brown, and bassist Jeanne Kennedy has ballooned to eight, including Italian multi-instrumentalists Jacopo Andreini and Fabrizio Testa, guitarist Ty Herman, drummer Keith Martinez, and vocalist Callie Benjamin (also of Montana’s DAEM). Yet their former strangeness hasn’t waned. “The Doorman” is a noise-funk rap with Beck-like vocals, “Church/Casino” is a dissonant, frenzied garage-punk banger, “Una Cura” is scowling Italian spoken word over bursts of guitar feedback, and “What a Wall (Flags Mean)” is a spastic, hard-driving electro/techno tune. But behind de Leon’s somnolent baritone, the title track (a duet with Benjamin) and “Oh Shoot” – both yearning, sardonic odes to rock fandom, a recurring theme for these concert-less times – reflect Miss Massive Snowflake’s more representative laidback, soul-infused slacker-rock, as does a wistful cover of Will Oldham/Palace’s 1994 single “West Palm Beach.”
