So pure in conception and so perfect in execution that you have to laugh in appreciation, Optic Sink imports the urgency of Natalie Hoffmann’s relentless Memphis punk band, Nots, into an electro-pop setting. Where Nots’ engine is buzzing headache guitars, her collaboration with Ben Bauermeister employs burping, sputtering analogue synths to create a sense of decaying retro-futurism, suggesting a more-anarchic, less-catchy version of early Devo. As with her rock group, Hoffmann’s blank vocals on this self-titled debut glide through the exhilarating noise like a disembodied spirit delivering puzzling news from a creepy other dimension. All in all, great fun!
