The zeitgeist of modern garage rock guitar returns. Palmyra Delran, who carved a dynamic career with The Friggs, and more recently the supergroup The Coolies, has just dropped a new sparkling piece of musical prowess. Alongside the Doppel Gang – Bob Wojciechowski, Michael Lynch, and Mark Brotter, the green shoots of a follow-up to the mind blowing album Come Spy With Me (2018) comes front and centre. While we await that long-player, this single will bridge the artistic gap, and get the blood pumping.
The latest single, “Lucky In Love” is an upbeat, slick cool slice of good time pie. With a riff that echoes “Then He Kissed Me” (The Crystals), a jump around beat, and lyrics that extract the hope from the hopelessness of love. The track does not so much attack but instead glides, with the intention of uplifting and not letting down. On the flipside, “Who’s Been Sleeping Here?”, again with more guitars per-square inch than most, those ideals of perfect romances are once again under the microscope. Here, Palmyra is playing out of her skin and tearing the strings on the guitar with a decent and inspired solo.
Regardless of the lyrical meanings of broken relationships, the songs work together beautifully. It is Palmyra and the Doppel Gang doing what they do best, shining a light on the darkness of uncertainty with a decent kiss of nostalgic rock and roll.
