Rodney Cromwell is perfectly capable of making sophisticated music. The evidence runs all through his back catalogue. But just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should and so his latest single, “Opus Three” cuts an unadorned and less complex figure as it takes a spin across the clubland dancefloor.
So, in many ways, a musically simple number, but perhaps simple is not the right word, maybe more direct, more understated, all about the 120bpm rhythms, the shimmering synth lines, the skittering percussion, scintillating textures and squelchy stylophone-esque tones. Underplayed, effective and just so damned good.
But, like all of his work, things are never as straightforward as that and coupled with this musically honest groove is a deeper lyrical discussion. Inspired by Anna Kavan’s surreal novel Ice, it paints a picture of two lovers on the brink of the apocalypse, separated by distance and lost in time, trying to find positivity in a world where there is little.
The parallels are obvious, and this search for empathy and optimism in a world that is falling apart is both powerful and poignant…not to mention timely!
So in short…simple and seductive, deep and meaningful, forward-thinking yet timeless in its story. And you thought this was just another dance track?
