Good question. Who indeed? Well, on the strength of this neat slice of groovesome rock and roll, I suspect that the answer is … no one. As they charge headlong through the song, just in control enough to keep things musically on track, just on the edge enough to keep things wild and exciting, you realise that the phrase “rock ‘n’ roll ain’t dead” isn’t just a throwaway cliche but actually, Sons of Silvers’ go-to slogan. And if it isn’t, it should be.
As the crunching riffs are fired off, as the drums thunder, as the dynamic ebb and flow perfectly to create spiralling crescendos and emphasising space, as the words are spat into your face like the threat that they are, it tells you everything you need to know about the difference between rock music and rock and roll.
If the former is all about monolithic slabs of noise, testosterone-driven stance, substance over style and more is more, the latter is all about the groove (yes, I know, I always overuse that word when talking about Sons of Silver, but that’s because they’re so damned groovy!) the swagger, the sexiness…yes, this is sexy music…the infectiousness, the boogie-ness (that’s a word, I think…don’t worry about it) and the sheer fun which exudes from every musical pore.
If ever you needed to give a TED talk about what rock ‘n’ roll is all about, especially in the modern age, just play the audience this track…seventeen times. If they are not partying like animals by then, you are probably wasting your time.
