Vonamor has always been expert at taking threads of dark, musical nostalgia and running them through some all-together more modern sounds. And if on the previous release, “Take Your Heart”, this took the form of an almost funky, angular electronic groove, here things are played slightly straighter.
“You The People” is an example of a slow-burning classic. A song that rises up from shaded minimalism, a strange entwined vocal duet built from opposite voices that are blended together so attractively, and a few chiming notes. And slowly, the music not only rises up to match the vocals but seems to eventually engulf them in a maelstrom of musical intensity. Soon the voices seem to be emanating from within the eye of a howling storm before things begin to subside and (relative) normality is returned.
It is a song built of passion and intensity but also a dark and delicious grace. It is a place where the voices become instruments in their own right, the words becoming more about their musical qualities than any direct communication. It is a place where forward-thinking electronica dances deftly with analogue instrumentation, where languages, English and Italian, combine to create a new tongue, a place where demons are exorcised and poignant and powerful themes are explored.
Taken from their eponymous debut album, “You The People” further secures Vonamor as one to watch, especially if you like your music adventurous, enigmatic, experimental and avant-garde. And who doesn’t need those qualities in their music right now?
