Aaron Skiles - Ain't No Marks (self-released)

5 June 2026

You might make an argument that with “Ain’t No Marks,” Aaron Skiles is hardly breaking new ground. But you also can’t say he hasn’t found a way to take that familiar indie rock sound and make it his own. And I guess that is the art of it: give them something easily accessible, yet once you have them where you want them, use your sonic subtleties and musical chops to make them realise that this is anything but more of the same. It’s a case of finding a new groove in the old forms, it’s a case of “it ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it.” And boy does he do it well.

Ahead of his latest album, Angels, Demons and Coin Flips, this is certainly a song that makes you sit up and take notice: the sound of rock energy, indie cool, and pop music’s accessibility sandwiched between… and slightly reminiscent of Ugly Kid Joe’s best-known song. (Okay, I went back and played the songs back to back, not so much actually.)

It’s big; it is precision-tooled from classic moves and alternative grooves, incendiary deliveries, and infectious ear-wormery. If this doesn’t make you want to check out the new album, which is actually the advance singles’ main job at hand, then maybe rock music isn’t for you after all.
