Abby London - I Can't Be on Time (self-released)

26 July 2025

Music, being the all-encompassing and malleable force that it is, is an art form of extremes. And while it can be used to tackle the most age-old philosophical issues and discuss the human condition at length, it can also be used to talk about very relatable and everyday experiences.

However, the clever thing about this new one from Abby London is that, although it appears to be, as the title suggests, merely about never being on time, it is also about something much more profound. Carving a gentle and thoroughly contemporary furrow through the same fringe pop meets folktronica realms that Natasha Khan’s Bat For Lashes or perhaps Dido made their own, not only does “I Can’t Be On Time” address the obvious issue of tardiness, it extends the idea of not feeling the need to adhere to less tangible and mofre abstract timetables to be perfect, poised, polished, to adhere to fad and fashion, to be metaphorically on trend and dancing to the tick of the clock of other people’s expectation.

Alt-pop, indie-pop, and folk-pop might be helpful to labels, but even those genres don’t work here; they seem to sell the song and the artist short. However, like all the best and most unique artists, I am at a loss to offer a better tag for this clever and creative music. It’s best not to think in such terms.

Just believe me when I tell you that Abby London might be navigating familiar pop pastures, but she is pursuing an exciting and adventurous and largely untrodden path through such realms.
