Ajay Mathur is a singer-songwriter residing in Switzerland, and he recently released his latest album Blow My Cover, in October. Featuring his signature take on classic rock and folk, Mathur grabs elements of everyone from The Beatles to David Bowie and Jackson Browne. The album is actually something of a collaboration in a true sense, because Mathur enlisted the help of 25 other musicians to interpret his previous songs, trusting their contributions implicitly. The result is the artist’s grandest, most dynamically-produced yet, and if this democratic effort still features Mathur at the center, he has clearly hit upon a really winning approach that perfectly suits his sound.
One of the real standouts is the jazzy, stripped back “Pennies to Gold” which beautifully showcases the power behind Mathur’s voice alongside some really fantastic yet understated guitar work. He branches out into a number of different genres like rockabilly-tinged country on “Walking on the Water” and the cabaret accordion of “Comedian,” but Mathur is truly most at home when he’s at his folkiest with wonderful additions like “Oh Angel” and “All For You.” For an album that is something of a remix, Blow My Cover is hands down the artist’s finest collection of songs yet, representing a brilliant milestone for his evolution as a musician.
